Removing the VMWare tray icon for all users: Best practices and recommendations

When you manually remove the icon what actually changes? A new value is added to the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VMware, Inc.\VMware Tools. The value added is ShowTray which is a REG_DWORD with Data 0:

So we know how to manually add the correct entry to the Registry to remove the VMware Tools icon from the System Tray for all users. I do not want to manually perform this on all machines I build, so we can use a simple one liner at a command prompt to add the key:

How to remove the VMWare tray icon for all users

The Safely Remove Hardware icon in Windows 7 offers the ability to eject my SATA drives, including the boot drive. I don't see myself ever needing this - especially not from the convenience of the tray icon.

It's a BIOS level option. In newer boards there are options in the BIOS to disable hot swapping (when you use AHCI/RAID as a controller). When the hot swap setting for a drive is disabled in the BIOS, it won't be listed in the ejectable drives in the system tray icon menu.

If you activate Orca by pressing the keyboard shortcut, the icon disappears in case that the user disables all of the provided options from the Universal Access Menu. The missing icon might cause difficulties to users with a visual impairment.

Plasma and SDDM will both use images found at /var/lib/AccountsService/icons/ as users' avatars. To configure with a graphical interface, you can use System Settings > Users, which may first need to be installed (see the plasma-desktop package). The file corresponding to your username can be removed to restore the default avatar.

In order to add icons to tray, applications often make use of the library appindicator. If your icons are blurry, check which version of libappindicator you have installed. If you only have libappindicator-gtk2 installed, you can install libappindicator-gtk3 as an attempt to get clear icons.

The previous reply is the official MS way, and preferable. If you want to remove Edge later on, for existing desktops or whatever, you can use the 'managetaskbar' scripts: -the-edge-icon-from-the-taskbar-during-osd/

If you have disabled the Active Protection Service after first turning off Active Protection either via the system tray icon or within the ATI GUI, then that is all that you can do here. The system tray icon is integrated in the ATI application and cannot be removed further as far as I understand. It remains to allow users to re-enable this protection again if needed.

Thanks for the confirmation. But it's a horrible decision given that in 2017 you could kill the icon. Now it's taking up precious tray icon space doing absolutely nothing. I realize I may be in the minority, but I *HATE* it when apps add icons w/o asking me first. Grrrrr.

I am completely with you on this, Hansang. It does not make any sense to have an icon there if the service is not activated, especially for those who do not wish to use the service at all. Some people want to use the product for its main purpose. Given that the ransomware protection is an additional service, users who don't use it should not be forced to have a tray icon sticking around.

The system tray (or "systray") is a section of the taskbars in the Microsoft Windows operating system (OS) user interface that provides easy access icons to the user's most commonly used apps and displays the clock.

To interact with a program in the system tray, select an icon with the mouse and double-click or right-click the icon. When minimizing the program after using it, it shrinks back into the system tray instead of into the main part of the taskbar.

What makes a system tray icon unique is that -- when installed -- it can have a customized message appear when the mouse is hovering over it; the menu that appears when users right-click it can be customized, and the action that occurs when they double-click it can also be customized.

For example, the double-click action for Windows Explorer could be to launch -- start or open a dialog window for -- the program. Still, the double-click action for a desktop icon could be to "View desktop," simply remove the active windows and show the underlying desktop.

An icon can be placed in the system tray when a program is installed by making an entry in the system registry or later by creating a shortcut to a program and dragging the shortcut icon to the system tray.

An icon can be removed by deleting the registry entry or right-clicking it and selecting Delete on the pop-up menu. The clock is removed by deselecting the "show clock" option in the taskbar properties.

A Host Sensor icon appears in the system tray on Windows machines that have the Host Sensor installed. You can use the icon to see the status of the Host Sensor, temporarily pause protection, show the log file, collect triage data, and enable or disable Host Sensor notifications.

As displayed through the tray icon on the device where the Umbrella roaming client is deployed, status is indicated through a colored dot that is added to the tray icon. Status is determined based on a series of DNS queries, which are used as tests to determine the correct state.

If you hover over the system tray and notice that the icons you use are missing, there are several reasons why this happens. You may have installed a Windows Update, which caused a glitch, or there are corrupted Registry entries that seem to conflict with Windows 10, making the system tray or icons disappear.

To do this using your mouse, select the arrow next to the Notification area to open the system tray and reveal the hidden icons. You can also drag the icons with your cursor and drop them on the taskbar.

We hope these steps helped you get your missing system tray and icons back. Make sure to search the rest of our site for more troubleshooting tips and tricks to help you fix other issues in different operating systems and devices.

When you Install the Intel HD Graphics Driver, the Intel tray Icon and Hotkey program are installed by default. In some situations it is advantageous to remove these programs, for example, to prevent users accidentally rotating the screen.

Check the for the presence of the key IgfxTray under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. If you have this key and the above method does not work, then it is likely that you have an older Intel display driver.
