Godspell began as a project by drama students at Carnegie Mellon University and then moved to the off-off-Broadway theater La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in the East Village of Manhattan. The show was rescored for an off-Broadway production, which opened on May 17, 1971, and became a long-running success. Many productions have followed worldwide, including a 2011 Broadway revival. An abbreviated one-act version of the musical designed for performers aged 18 and under also exists, titled Godspell Junior.[1]

Several members of the cast then begin to question Jesus's authority, and he responds with yet another parable. He is asked, "What is the greatest commandment?" and responds, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul... And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" The Pharisees continue to question him, and he laments "Alas for You" and calls them hypocrites. Members of the cast gather, join in Jesus' song, and throw garbage at the Pharisees.

The show was then brought to the attention of producers Edgar Lansbury (brother of Angela Lansbury), Joseph Beruh, and Stuart Duncan by Carnegie Mellon alumnus and associate producer Charles Haid, who wanted to transfer the show to off-Broadway.[13] The show was first produced at La Mama as a play with original music for eight songs by Duane Bolick, Jeffrey Mylett, who added one of his songs ("The Raven and The Swan") and Peggy Gordon and Jay Hamburger, who added "By My Side". The producers then hired Stephen Schwartz, another Carnegie Mellon alumnus, to re-score the show. Schwartz's score incorporated a variety of musical genres, including pop, folk rock, gospel, and vaudeville. "By My Side", written by Carnegie Mellon students Jay Hamburger and Peggy Gordon, was kept from the original score. As in the original score, most of the lyrics not written by Schwartz were from the Episcopal hymnal.[14] The show opened as a musical at the Cherry Lane Theatre on May 17, 1971. It transferred to the Promenade Theatre three months later, and closed on June 13, 1976, after 2,124 performances at the Promenade.[15] This production was directed by Tebelak, and the original cast included Lamar Alford, Peggy Gordon, David Haskell, Joanne Jonas, Robin Lamont, Sonia Manzano, Gilmer McCormick, Jeffrey Mylett, Stephen Nathan, and Herb Braha (Simon).[16] The band included Jesse Cutler on guitar and bass, Richard LaBonte on bass, Stephen Reinhardt on keyboards, and Ricky Shutter on drums and percussion. In late 1971, LaBonte was replaced by bassist Steve Manes when two of the original musicians, Shutter and LaBonte, went with the majority of the original cast to The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles to open the show there. With the exception of LaBonte, they all returned to the Promenade in January 1972.[16]

The first production after the off-Broadway show opened at the Playbox Theatre in Melbourne, Australia on November 15, 1971. The cast included Colleen Hewett, Collette Mann, Christopher Pate, and George Spartels. The producers, Aztec Services and Williamson Edgley Theatres, opened a second production in Sydney on April 10, 1972. Peta Toppano, John Waters, and Marty Rhone were in the Sydney production. Melbourne played 504 performances and Sydney played 507 before the two companies went on tour, performing another 700 shows.[17]

Godspell opened at the Roundhouse Theatre in Chalk Farm, London on November 17, 1971. This London production featured Jacquie-Ann Carr, Julie Covington, David Essex, Neil Fitzwiliam, Jeremy Irons, Verity-Anne Meldrum, Deryk Parkin, Tom Saffery, Gay Soper, and Marti Webb. After a successful run at the Roundhouse Theatre, the production transferred to the Wyndham's Theatre, also in London, on January 26, 1972.[18] with Barry Stokes.

My name is Peter Helffrich and I have an unpublished fantastic recording of Cheryl's. My father had a recording studio where she recorded her demo between Special Songs on Ampex and her contract with A&M. She did not reprise any of these songs, and hearing her without others is precious. Her brother Michael says that it is the most personal.I love her and was in contact with her in LA at the end of her life, when the other Peter could no longer deal with her epilepsy. Her stepmother (not evil) is 90 and still compus mentis. An original poster from Blue Sailor still hangs in the room where my friends and family gather.1037N6thStWhitehallPA18052

Late in 1971 Stevie Wright moves to Perth, Western Australia. He joins a group called Likefun. Other members of this act include Ray Hoff (vocals), Morri Pierson (vocals), Shirley Reid (vocals), Alan Wilkes (organ) and John Tucak (bass). However by mid-1972 Stevie Wright is back in Sydney.

Glenn Frey meets Don Henley in 1970. Frey considers a solo career but is counselled by David Geffen (manager of Crosby, Stills And Nash) to form a group instead. In the meantime, Frey joins the backing group for country rock singer Linda Ronstadt in 1971. Don Henley is also part of this backing band.

The future Eagles sign a recording contract with Asylum Records in September 1971. Asylum is a fledgling label created by David Geffen, the same individual who urged Glenn Frey to form a group rather than attempt a solo career. Asylum will subsequently also sign such associates of The Eagles as Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and J.D. Souther. David Geffen and his partner Elliot Roberts co-manage the act that will become The Eagles.

In 1971 Don Felder marries Susan Pickersgill. Don and Susan go on to have four children: a son named Jesse (born on 6 April 1974), Rebecca (born on 31 December 1975), Cody (born on 10 October 1978) and Leah (born on 24 November 1982).

In 1971 Joe Walsh marries his second wife, Stefany Rhodes. Joe and Stefany have a daughter, Emma Kristen (1971-1974). The little girl dies in 1974 at the age of 3 as a result of injuries she sustains in a car smash on the way to nursery school.

After the withdrawal of Australian troops, the hospital, including nursing sisters and most medical staff, left Vietnam at the end of 1971. Over the four years, a total of forty-three RAANC nurses had served there. Like all nurses across the century, the women who served in Vietnam are often reticent about their wartime experiences. Some have been scarred and prefer not to talk about it. As Norma Dickson said: 'my memories are not pleasant memories, especially my memories of being in the triage area when the wounded came in straight from the field. All they had were a bloodied field dressing on and the blood was soaked into their dirty green uniforms'. Pamela West believed her Vietnam experience was a mix between China Beach and M*A*S*H. 'Those two series are what field nursing and nursing in uniform is about. It is about hard work, nursing non-stop, working with sometimes no equipment, working with just what you have got'.

Margaret Moses, from South Australia, went to Saigon in March 1971 to join her friend Rosemary Taylor, who ran an extensive western adoption program and orphanages for abandoned or orphaned children. With the fall of Saigon imminent and Operation Babylift underway, Margaret and fellow South Australian nurse Lee Makk were killed when an American plane crashed on take-off, on 4 April 1975, killing seventy-eight children and their escorts. The other Australian female death in Vietnam was that of 20-year-old singer Cathy Warnes, who was shot by a deranged American soldier in July 1969.

SOS was formed in Sydney in May 1965 to protest at the concept of conscription, particularly as 20-year-old men could be conscripted but could not yet vote. Within six months of being formed, the SOS had 300 members across New South Wales and branches in other states. SOS attracted women from across the political spectrum and from all walks of life. Conscription had been introduced in 1964, and the men conscripted were chosen by their birthdays, in a ballot. According to a Morgan Gallop poll held in November 1967, conscription was supported by 65 per cent of the population, but only 37 per cent believed these men should be sent to the Vietnam War. The anti-war movement culminated in the Vietnam moratorium campaigns of 1970 and 1971. Modelled on the American moratoriums, the rallies attracted hundreds of thousands of people and were some of the largest public demonstrations ever seen in Australia. The moratorium held on 8 May 1970 drew more than 150,000 protesters to the streets. From April 1970, Australian troops were gradually withdrawn from Vietnam. The election of the Whitlam government in December 1972 saw conscription abolished and the final troops withdrawn.
