ProjectMix I/O errors can be rooted in an outdated or corrupted device driver. When the operating system that your device depends on gets an update, drivers can suddenly stop working with it. The good news is that Firewire drivers can be updated to correct any problems.

Finding the correct Firewire driver directly on the manufacturer's website for your hardware might seem futile. Despite having experience at locating, installing, and manually upgrading ProjectMix I/O drivers, the task will be time consuming and highly bothersome. Incorrect hardware drivers can lead to more serious issues than just a faulty installation.

Using a driver updating program can allow drivers to update without difficulty, so we These updaters will ensure that you always have the right drivers for your hardware, and that they are always backed up until you upgrade to the new versions. Having a driver backup file helps you to rollback any compromised driver to the most recent version.

The ProjectMix I/O is a stellar FireWire audio interface and integrated control surface from the folks at M-Audio. It's fully compatible with any DAW supporting Mackie Control, Logic Control and HUI protocols, including Pro Tools M- Powered, Ableton Live, Cubase, Logic, Digital Performer, SONAR, etc. My primary DAW's are Pro Tools and Live. M-Audio was kind enough to supply a copy of Pro Tools M-Powered 7 with this review unit, so I'll touch on that as well.

Looking to get into Pro Tools? Looking for a DAW controller or interface? All of the above? Well, you can't really beat this combination. The ProjectMix I/O is affordable, well built, and flexible enough to make one scratch one's head and utter that ultimate studio rat endorsement, "How did I get by without this thing?" (ProjectMix I/O $1599.95 MSRP, PT MP $299.95 MSRP; www.m-audio.com)

Digidesign Pro Tools M-Powered 7 software introduces a plethora of new features and enhancements that deliver significantly expanded MIDI and audio recording and editing capabilities, greater mixing power and flexibility, enhanced efficiency, and improved ease of use, providing a new creative environment for the industry-standard digital audio workstation. Pro Tools M-Powered 7 software also adds Pro Tools M-Powered software support for five additional M-Audio peripherals, including Black Box, Ozone, Mobile Pre USB, Fast Track USB, and Transit.

The Pro Tools M-Powered 7 application requires a supported M-Audio audio interface and an iLok with Pro Tools M-Powered authorization. The M-Powered application will not open without the iLok authorization.

In addition to the Pro Tools M-Powered 7 Update installers, you will also need to download the latest drivers for your M-Audio hardware. To download the latest driver updates from the M-Audio website:

If you do not own Pro Tools M-Powered software, you can try the Pro Tools M-Powered Demo version. A compatible M-Audio audio interface & current M-Audio drivers for that interface are required for the Pro Tools M-Powered Demo versions:

A PROJECT TO MIXI tried ProjectMix I/O in Logic 7.1, Nuendo 3.2, Live 5 and Pro Tools M-Powered 7. By far, Logic support felt the most thorough, with extra channel views, automation functions and deeper panning and plug-in editing. Granted, ProjectMix I/O can only support functions that a protocol offers, so this is not to fault M-Audio. All programs responded well to control, and FireWire audio latency was impressively low as I ran live instruments through a 128-sample buffer, resulting in a delay of only a couple milliseconds at 96 kHz.

FINAL OUTPUTThough its price is comparable to some compact control surfaces that do not offer audio capabilities, I would be lying if I said that ProjectMix I/O is worth the money for its control features alone. Controller-only solutions such as the Mackie Control Universal offer more parametric and better tactile control, as well as entry into an expandable system including the brilliant C4 soft-knob sidecar, at roughly two-thirds the street price. On the other hand, users also looking to condense or upgrade their old DAWs to 24/96, and who are in need of several line and microphone inputs and perhaps a MIDI controller input have every reason to be attracted to ProjectMix I/O.

Products affected by the driver update include the Fast Track USB, Fast Track Pro, MobilePre USB, JamLab, Transit USB, Audiophile USB, FireWire Solo, FireWire Audiophile, FireWire 410, FireWire 1814, ProjectMix I/O, Ozonic, M-Audio Ozone, Oxygen 8, MIDISPORT 2x2, MIDISPORT 1x1, MIDISPORT 4x4, MIDISPORT 2x4 and MIDISPORT 8x8/s.

We continue our Pro Tools Expert Blast From The Past series with the M-Audio Project Mix I/O - an all in one control surface/audio interface. I owned a Project Mix for two months before returning it to the dealer as I felt it was not an able audio interface/control surface solution. To this day I still feel that this was the worst studio gear purchase I ever made.

I have been using the ProjectMix since 2004 on all consequent versions of Sonar through CbB without any problems. Make sure that your FW card/port is driven by a Texas Instruments chipset. I am using the old Windows Vista driver 5.10.0.5061 (seems to be the most stable on my rig) and have only one caveat: occasionally CbB will lock up/freeze/crash (for reasons that are too numerous to detail here, I've tracked all of them!) and stay hung in the RAM as shown in Task Manager, and won't quit.I have determined that it is a hang in the driver, but there are a couple of solutions that consistently work for me;

Just warning you that there will be the occasional, albeit rare, hang, and trust me... there is nothing else that can be done with the driver, unless someone wants to waste the time writing a new one. In which case, it would be cool if they would re-implement the MIDI Control Surface API for it too. (LIke THAT will ever happen!)

I haven't used this audio interface much because I busted one of the preamps and it always clipped. I had it serviced and have been using it more often lately. It can produce quite decent recordings provided you use good quality microphones. Lately I've been recording drums so I needed to use it. M-Audio never updated the Mac drivers which didn't allow me to use it on OSX so I switched to Windows 10 on a custom PC. I'm glad I did, because this setup is more powerful than my previous Mac setup. Update as of Dec 23, 2015: My ProjectMix is fried. The LCD screen won't show anything but squares and no letters. None of the faders or buttons work. I can't reset it or get it into test mode. The fact that this unit has been forgotten by M-Audio with no driver updates for years proves its unreliability. I will send it to have it serviced and fingers crossed, they might be able to fix it. If that doesn't happen, I will have to buy a new audio interface with 8 mic pres.

It's a legacy product from M-Audio, but it's definitely a product that they should continue updating and supporting because this thing is a beast. It's built great, the sliders have the right amount of resistance to it and along with that it is also an audio interface that connects via Firewire. I still use this control surface up till this day, and it works well especially with the motorized faders.

Complete Production Experience Computer-based DAWs seem to have virtually no limitations?except those imposed by using a mouse to do the job of dedicated hardware. ProjectMix I/O finally puts all that tactile control back under your fingertips. It also combines that control with M-Audio's acclaimed FireWire audio interface technology, eliminating clutter while integrating everything you need to transform your computer-based music system into a full-fledged digital audio workstation.

Total I/O ProjectMix I/O gives you just about every kind of I/O you might need for a session -- and at the same price as many control surfaces lacking audio altogether. Eight analog input channels all feature 1/4 in. balanced and XLR microphone inputs with individual mic/line switches. Of course, phantom power is provided for up to eight condenser mics and input 1 even features a front-panel instrument input so you easily plug a guitar or bass right in. 8 x 8 ADAT Lightpipe I/O brings the simultaneous input total to 16 and allows you to expand your system with devices like M-Audio's award winning Octane preamp. This allows for eight more channels of preamp via Lightpipe. 2 x 2 S/PDIF handles all your other digital connectivity, and word clock synchronizes ProjectMix with other digital devices. 2ff7e9595c
