A PROJECT TO MIXI tried ProjectMix I/O in Logic 7.1, Nuendo 3.2, Live 5 and Pro Tools M-Powered 7. By far, Logic support felt the most thorough, with extra channel views, automation functions and deeper panning and plug-in editing. Granted, ProjectMix I/O can only support functions that a protocol offers, so this is not to fault M-Audio. All programs responded well to control, and FireWire audio latency was impressively low as I ran live instruments through a 128-sample buffer, resulting in a delay of only a couple milliseconds at 96 kHz.
FINAL OUTPUTThough its price is comparable to some compact control surfaces that do not offer audio capabilities, I would be lying if I said that ProjectMix I/O is worth the money for its control features alone. Controller-only solutions such as the Mackie Control Universal offer more parametric and better tactile control, as well as entry into an expandable system including the brilliant C4 soft-knob sidecar, at roughly two-thirds the street price. We continue our Pro Tools Expert Blast From The Past series with the M-Audio Project Mix I/O - an all in one control surface/audio interface. I owned a Project Mix for two months before returning it to the dealer as I felt it was not an able audio interface/control surface solution. To this day I still feel that this was the worst studio gear purchase I ever made.
I have been using the ProjectMix since 2004 on all consequent versions of Sonar through CbB without any problems. Make sure that your FW card/port is driven by a Texas Instruments chipset. I am using the old Windows Vista driver 5.10.0.5061 (seems to be the most stable on my rig) and have only one caveat: occasionally CbB will lock up/freeze/crash (for reasons that are too numerous to detail here, I've tracked all of them!) and stay hung in the RAM as shown in Task Manager, and won't quit.I have determined that it is a hang in the driver, but there are a couple of solutions that consistently work for me;
Just warning you that there will be the occasional, albeit rare, hang, and trust me... there is nothing else that can be done with the driver, unless someone wants to waste the time writing a new one. In which case, it would be cool if they would re-implement the MIDI Control Surface API for it too. (LIke THAT will ever happen!)
I haven't used this audio interface much because I busted one of the preamps and it always clipped. I had it serviced and have been using it more often lately. It can produce quite decent recordings provided you use good quality microphones. Lately I've been recording drums so I needed to use it. M-Audio never updated the Mac drivers which didn't allow me to use it on OSX so I switched to Windows 10 on a custom PC. I'm glad I did, because this setup is more powerful than my previous Mac setup. Update as of Dec 23, 2015: My ProjectMix is fried. The LCD screen won't show anything but squares and no letters. None of the faders or buttons work. I can't reset it or get it into test mode. The fact that this unit has been forgotten by M-Audio with no driver updates for years proves its unreliability. I will send it to have it serviced and fingers crossed, they might be able to fix it. If that doesn't happen, I will have to buy a new audio interface with 8 mic pres.
It's a legacy product from M-Audio, but it's definitely a product that they should continue updating and supporting because this thing is a beast. It's built great, the sliders have the right amount of resistance to it and along with that it is also an audio interface that connects via Firewire. I still use this control surface up till this day, and it works well especially with the motorized faders.
